What is “Thirties in Manhattan?”

This has been a long time coming. For the last few years I’ve wanted to delete my Instagram, Tumblr, and Pinterest in favor of an online space where I can focus on myself.

But I always stopped myself in fear of becoming irrelevant. As I’m getting older I’m beginning to see the enjoyment in becoming irrelevant. In becoming more private, and more unknown. This isn’t to say I’m becoming anti-social or a hermit. I just no longer feel like being digitally insignificant is bad.

The title Thirties in Manhattan is obvious. I’m in my thirties and I live in Manhattan. And this is a living document of sorts to help me sort through my immediate thoughts through various types of digital record keeping.

I don’t think it’s a blog but who’s to say. If you read through all this you’ll probably notice a lot of repetition. Threads that tie thoughts and concepts together. Little tendrils that keep all of these things tethered to me. Although it might be annoying to you, it’s useful to me as I reread the things I share. I’m reminded of Julia Cameron, author of the Artist’s Way, and her advice that if we write three pages everyday we’re bound to repeat some things about our lives. And if we tire of writing about them, then we’ll be more motivated to edit our lives to avoid those things.

This also isn’t really a full account of my life. For now it’s a document recounting my research and visual creations for several weeks during one semester. Although the goal is to keep this going for as long as I can, this is only a snapshot of one specific moment and context of my life in time. I’m hoping it grows and spreads outside of VCFA, but in the same breadth there’s no pressure for it to exist outside of its purpose.

Lastly this is an experiment. I’ve been eager to control my own content away from the techno-fascist beasts that make up the mainstream social media. I’ve wanted a place to document how my life grows over the years without forcing people to belong to those channels. Outside of a place with influencers, marketers, and people relying on deceptive patterns to influence to mindlessly consume.

So please, at any point, when you’ve had enough of me, close out of this tab, and go touch some grass.
